PPS Workers, Custodians Bargain

Aug 9, 2007 - Portland Public Schools nutrition service workers and custodians are at the bargaining table struggling for a fair contract.

When it comes to the health and safety of our school children, Custodians and Food Service workers keep our kids fed and buildings secure. Everyone benefits from a stable and dedicated workforce.

Together, we'll show the Schools Administration that Portland cares about a contract that guarantees.

Quality services in our schools

Support our efforts to turn Portland's school lunch program into a national model for affordable, nutritious food that kids will want to eat.

Job security

Food service workers could lose jobs to outside contractors. We've seen this before. Custodians just returned to work in our schools after overturning a decision in 2002 to outsource their jobs to a private contractor.

Staffing and equipment to get the job done

Chronic understaffing has Custodians and Food Service workers scrambling to fulfill their basic work functions. The Custodians staff is down to a third of what it was 25 years ago. Many Food Service Workers had their hours cut so that they work through their lunch break to get food served on time.
